Victoria, Cent, 1878, (KM.9), NGC MS61BN. The Cent 1878 is one of the most difficult dates in the Straits series to find in high grades; this outstanding lightly toned coin is in our view of the highest rarity for its uncirculated grade; it is simply the best piece we have ever seen. It has some interesting small die cracks on the obverse and surely must rank as the crown jewel of any worthy Straits collection.

|
249
Victoria, 5 Cents, 1873, (KM.10), NCS AU Details - excessive surface hairlines. The hairlines do not detract from the very desirable coin for this difficult date. Provenance: Ex R.J. Ford collection, Singapore Coin Auction 1992, lot 656.

US$21,000-24,000 Realised: US$18,000

260
Victoria, 5 Cents, 1883, (KM.10), NGC AU58. This has a different effigy (for comparison, a young head piece accompanies this lot), from the earlier ones from 1871 onwards and strangely not seen again until 1887, we have only come across less that 5 examples of this variety so far and none as nice as this one. The young head coin is extremely fine or better with light scratches on the obverse and a planchet flaw on the reverse. (2)

Victoria, 10 Cents, 1883H, (KM.11), extremely fine. Despite the unfortunate graffiti scratches on the reverse, this is a very desirable and very rare example of the variety of the rarest date of the 10 Cents series in which the round top "3" is over-dated on the flat top "3" in the date. Although this variety has been recorded by Saram Singh's "Coins of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, 1400 - 1986" and elsewhere, this is the only piece that we have seen.
